Drum Major Auditions

In addition to the regular leadership application and interview process, candidates for drum major will participate in a supplemental audition. This consists of five parts:

Conducting Exercise

The prepared conducting excercise for 2020 is an excerpt from "Let There Be Light." Begin conducting three measures before letter E, cut off at the end of H9 (last measure of the excerpt.)

Special Instructions for 2020/2021

Please submit a video recording with the following:

1. Place the camera so that your whole body is visible and call the commands for:

  • attention
  • horns up
  • horns down
  • parade rest

2. With the camera in the same position, play the audio mp3 of the Conducting Exercise out loud (so that your video picks up the audio) and conduct along with it.

3. Record your answers to the following questions:

  • Why should you be selected for the position of drum major?
  • What do you see as the drum major's role in the band program?
  • About an hour before a performance, a friend in the band asks to tell you something if you promise not to tell anyone else. You do so, and says he has some e-cigarettes in his bag and several friends are going to vape after dismissal. He invites you to join him. What would you do in this situation?
  • After a show, the band directors head to critique. They ask you to keep the band in place until they return. After they leave, a parent volunteer says the band needs to move to the trucks and begin loading. You explain the band director's instructions, but the parent says she did not hear those instructions and it's getting late so the band needs to move and start loading. The band directors are still in critique and you cannot get ahold of them. What would you do in this situation?

Please do not collaborate with other candidates on these questions. We would like to hear YOUR answers.

The full panel interview and tempo control portions of the drum major audition are dispensed for the 2020/2021 school year.

Upload the video to your folder in the "Copies of Very Important Documents" Google Drive.
