Troubadours were traveling musicians of the medieval period, most popular between the 11th and 13th centuries. They would move from town to town performing in royal courts, usually reciting epic romances (for example, Robin Hood and King Arthur) and focusing on themes of chivalry and courtly love.
Although their melodies were monophonic like Gregorian Chants and other medieval music, they introduced the lute into Europe from its origins as the Arabic al'oud.
