Concert EnsemblesConcert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble
University High School offers three levels of concert band.
These year-long, formative classes taken during the school day, designed for students ready to build on skills and knowledge previously acquired in a middle or high school instrumental ensemble. Students develop their technique and further their enjoyment and appreciation of music through performance of high-quality wind literature. Rehearsals focus on development of critical listening/aural skills, individual musicianship, instrumental technique, refinement of ensemble skills, and aesthetic engagement.
The Concert Band is our introductory level concert ensemble. There is no audition for this ensemble: the Concert Band is open to any student enrolled at University High School, regardless of experience level. Whether you are still developing your skill, trying out a secondary instrument, or new to band altogether, the Concert Band is designed to give students a firm grasp of fundamental musicianship.
The Concert Band performs several times a year, including at the Winter Concert, Music Performance Assessment, and Spring Showcase.
The Symphonic Band is our intermediate level concert ensemble. The largest concert ensemble at University High School, the Symphonic Band is under the direction of Associate Director of Bands Jeff Willis. Under his leadership, the Symphonic Band has regularly been rated a "superior" ensemble by the Florida Bandmasters' Association and has advanced to the State Music Performance Assessment multiple times.
